Easy Believism

easy-button

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

(Matthew 7:13-14 ESV)

What is “Easy Believism”? As I am using the term here, I use it to mean the idea that salvation can be had by a simple act of believing the gospel message in one’s mind,  without an accompanying changed heart and life, and turning away from sin.

It’s very important to note that this does not mean one is earning ones own salvation with good works. That is a common attack made from the other side on this biblical teaching. Rather, it is a recognition that sin is evil, and if Jesus is really our Lord, then we will earnestly desire not to grieve our Lord by sinning against him, and to the best of our abilities we will attempt to minimize the presence of sin in our lives as Christians. The other common false charge here is the idea that if you reject easy believism you must be teaching “sinless perfectionism”, saying that to be saved one must live a perfect life after your conversion. That’s not right, either. It’s inevitable that we will stumble and sin as we live in fallen, corrupted bodies and we live in a fallen, corrupted world. There’s a world of difference, though, between attempting to live righteously and occasionally stumbling,  and not even attempting to live according to God’s will and going on about your sinful life unchanged. Ultimately, God will be the judge.  He tests the hearts and knows whose faith is genuine- those who truly love Him.
